Networks

Networks

Nodes: End points, host, client
MAC Address: Median Access Control
PAN: Personal Area Network
WAN: Wide Area Network
LAN: Local Area Network
SAN: Storage Area Network

Topology

Physical vs Local Topology: The physical topology of a network defines how the devices are physically connected.
The logical topology defines how the devices how the devices communicate across the physical topology.

A network wired in star topology can behave logically as a bus network by using a bus protocol and            appropriate physical switching

Switch vs Hub: The switch sets up 'access tables' isolate each node's connection. This provides security for each node. The hub however sends every piece of traffic to every node on the network, meaning it is mid and not secure.

Star network topology Pros: Reliable connectivity, inherently good security, good performance (one node per connection)

Star network topology Cons: Central point of failure (the switch or hub), requires a powerful central point.

Mesh network topology Pros: Very secure, fast, reliable

Mesh network topology cons: Can be prohibitively expensive.

The internet is a collection of different MANs WANs and LANs all linked together using router
