Impacts of Technology on Business
How has technology impacted organisations?
Changes in face to face communication:
Organisations now use email and communication software to interact with each other instead of face to face communication. The decrease in face to face communication could make miscommunication more common in the organisation. Global communication around the world can make multination corporations run more smoothly. Being sent messages outside office hours can be seen as unethical as those times are meant to be for the employee to relax, with some exceptions.
Increase in reach and scale:
New technology has meant that business' can expand even further outside of the previous areas they were working in. The organisations can expand outwards further and reach a new customer base with these new technologies. But this could also cause people to over estimate the reach and scale of the organisation. Potentially customers may not want to see the advertisements that are being shown and intentionally avoid them. Websites mean that consumers can find out information about an organisation from anywhere in the world.
Increase in expected productivity outputs:
Productivity outputs have increased dramatically due to the influx of new technology. This has meant that more work can be completed in a shorter space of time. Making it easier for organisations with lots of paperwork to complete assignments. But this again can cause people to over estimate how product people can be causing setbacks in such organisations.
Increase of staff monitoring:
In addition for it to be easier to get work done it is also easier for people to get distracted at work. Therefore staff monitoring on technology and in general has increased. This can keep the organisation on track and in line for deadlines and stop employees from drifting away from the work they have been assigned and paid to do. It can also be used to safeguard against theft and stop criminals from committing cybercrime or data breaches. However privacy issues can play a role in this argument as confidential information can be seen by people who are not meant to view it. It can also make employers distrust there employees which can create a tense atmosphere in a workplace environment.
Adaptive work practices:
Adaptive work practices, like working from home have meant that more people can get work done while away from the office. It can also help people how have specific needs that can only be met while they are at home to work in a professional setting. However it has lead to an increase in organisations pushing there employees to work after hours from home, which can cause stress on workers. As well as this the increased isolation from other people can have many unwanted effects on employees. Employees may find it hard to "switch off" after hours which can cause stress
Shifts in skills requirements and skills redeployment
New training will be required when autonomous operations are implemented, this will take time out of work for some employees and cost the organization money. As well as this some employees may not want to leave there current occupation and work at a different organization because of this change. All of these reasons may mean that employees got laid off from there positions to make room for people who are already trained with the new equipment.
Autonomous operations
New technology has meant that tasks that were once done be people can now be done by computers. For example Excel spreadsheets have made accounting significantly easier and more accessible. As well as this automation has meant that hard labour intense jobs that are undesirable have been replaced in favour of machines that can do the boring work for them, decrease costs for the employer. Employers like to cut costs when it is desired and automation can help with that. However the belief that these new technologies could take jobs instead of assist them has been a contentious issue. And it still linger around today with the rise of large scale language models like ChatGPT. These models being able to create entire essays of writing with them being almost indistinguishable from actual human writing, this then potentially threatens the jobs of writers significantly.
