Step-by-step guide

  1. Install Virtual Box (Latest Version)
  2. Install the ISO files from Microsoft or your chosen distro of Linux
  3. Open Virtual Box
  4. Then press 'new' and then make sure the ISO file is correctly selected on the first page.
  5. Adjust further settings based on your system specs 
  6. In general if you are using windows go for >4 CPU cores and at least 8000MB in RAM. For Linux i would suggest going for at least 2 CPU cores but you can go as low as 1 if you are going without a GUI or headless.
  7. Everything else you can leave at default
  8. Once you have setup the basics move on to starting the VM
  9. Once the VM has loaded you should end up on the setup screen

Windows Server

  1. If you are using Windows make sure you install the Windows Server ISO from Microsoft
  2. Follow the previous steps with only above as the exception
  3. Once you are in the setup menu for Windows Server make sure when going through the setup that you select the Windows Standard Desktop version
  4. Then wait for it boot and restart
  5. If it asks you to 'Press Enter to boot from CD or DVD' DO NOTHING
  6. Then it should boot into the OS and asks you for a password
