Freedom of Information Act 2000
- This act deals with access to information
- It sought to support the right of access; that is the right to access information on any topic from any public authority
- The FoI Act applies to all public authorities including schools, health trusts, the police and other government agencies
- The information commission office remains responsible for overseeing the FoI act
- The Office of the Information Commissioner oversees the FoI act
- The type of information that can be requested includes printed documents, computer files, letters, emails, photographs, and sound or video recordings
- Information that will be withheld includes anything to do with national security, personal data, commercial interests.
- National security: information supplied by, or relating to, bodies dealing with security matters. A certificate signed by a Minister of the Crown is conclusive proof that the exemption is justified.
Computer Misuse Act 1990
- The Focus of the act was to criminalise the accessing or modifying data stored on a computer system without appropriate consent or permission
- The act was developed following a case in 1987 Regina vs Gold and Schifreen
- They managed to gain remote access to British Telecom Prestel service at a trade show.
- They acquired access by shoulder surfing
- So they used the authentic access details of a BT engineer to carry out the remote access attack.
- Unauthorized access to computer material, Unauthorized access with intent to commit a further crime, Unauthorized modification of data, Making, supplying, or obtaining anything for computer misuse offenses, Unauthorized acts causing serious damage, Serious damage to national security
Hacking
White Hat
When a white hat hacker discovers a vulnerability, they will exploit it only with permission and not tell others about it until it has been fixed.
Black Hat
In contrast, the black hat will illegally exploit it or tell others how to do so.
Gray Hat
The gray hat will neither illegally exploit it nor tell others how to do so.
- One way the digital economy act promotes the safe use of digital products is the use of age verification on someone products to help protect minors. Another would be help combat pirating online media promoting safe consumption of digital media.
- Web marketing involves promoting products, services, or web tools to help promote what they sell/do.
- The DEA helps protect children from adult content by adding steps to websites that have age restricted content by implementing things like age verification, blocking sites that don’t comply with the roles, and social media platforms implementing restrictions.
- The promotion of digital skills helps ensure that adults have access to the necessary skills to participate fully in the digital society, allowing them to take full advantage of what they have to offer.
- The basic internet speeds that are defined by the USO are that download speed is a minimum of 10Mbps and an upload of 1Mbps. There are also other additional quality standards like having an ‘acceptable amount of lag’ and that each person has to have a reasonable data usage limit.
